Chapter 2: Nouns (Sangya) & Articles (A, An, The) in Hinglish

Chapter 1 mein humne Sentence Structure seekha tha. Ab hum English Grammar ke foundation yani Parts of Speech ka pehla aur sabse important topic shuru karenge: NOUNS aur uske saath judne wale ARTICLES.

Competitive exams (SSC, Banking) mein "Spotting Errors" ka ek bada hissa Nouns aur Articles ke rules aur exceptions se aata hai. Chalo ise deep mein samajhte hain.

Part 1: NOUN (Sangya) - Basics to Advanced

Definition: Noun is the name of a person, place, thing, quality, condition, or action. (Kisi bhi cheez ka naam Noun hai).

1. Types of Nouns (5 Kinds)

Type Definition & Examples Exam Rule ⚠️
Proper Noun Specific Name (e.g., Ravi, Delhi, India, Taj Mahal). Isse pehle generally 'The' nahi lagta (Exceptions hain). Capital letter se start hota hai.
Common Noun General Name for a class (e.g., boy, city, country, monument). Singular Common Noun ke pehle Article (A/An/The) zaroor lagta hai.
Collective Noun Group Name (e.g., Team, Jury, Army, Crowd, Fleet). Agar group ek unit ki tarah kaam kare → Singular Verb.
Agar members alag-alag opinion rakhein → Plural Verb.
(The Jury is deciding vs The Jury are divided).
Material Noun Substance/Matter jisse cheezein banti hain (e.g., Gold, Water, Wood, Sugar). Ye humesha Uncountable hote hain. Inke saath 'A/An' nahi lagta aur Verb Singular aati hai.
Abstract Noun Feelings, Ideas, Quality (e.g., Honesty, Bravery, Childhood, Happiness). Inka plural nahi banta. Generally 'The' nahi lagta (e.g., Honesty is the best policy).

2. Countable vs. Uncountable Nouns (Most Important for Exams)

Exams mein sabse zyada errors yahin se aate hain. Yaad rakhein:

  • Countable: Jise gin sakte hain (Star, Rupee, Second). Inka Plural banta hai.
  • Uncountable: Jise gin nahi sakte, sirf measure kar sakte hain (Money, Time, Knowledge). Inka Plural NAHI banta.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Super Important Exam Rule:
Ye words hamesha Singular (Uncountable) rehte hain. Inmein 's/es' mat lagana:
Scenery, Poetry, Furniture, Advice, Information, Hair, Business, Mischief, Bread, Stationery, Luggage, Baggage, Knowledge, Jewelry.

❌ Incorrect: He gave me many advices.
✅ Correct: He gave me many pieces of advice. (Countable banane ke liye 'pieces of' lagate hain).

3. Noun Gender

  • Masculine: Male (Boy, Lion, Father). Strength/Power ke liye bhi use hota hai (Sun, Time, Death).
  • Feminine: Female (Girl, Lioness, Mother). Beauty/Grace ke liye bhi use hota hai (Moon, Earth, Nature).
  • Common: Either Male or Female (Student, Doctor, Teacher, Child).
  • Neuter: Non-living things (Table, Pen, Room).

4. Possessive Case (Apostrophe 's Rules)

Possession (malkiyat) dikhane ke liye hum 's ka use karte hain, lekin iske rules strict hain.

  1. Living Things: Ram's book, Cow's milk. (Correct)
  2. Non-Living Things: ❌ Table's leg (Wrong) → ✅ The leg of the table.
  3. Hissing Sound (Words ending in S): Sirf apostrophe (') lagate hain, 's' nahi.
Example: Boys' hostel (Not Boys's), Jesus' life.
  4. Compound Noun: Last word mein 's' lagta hai.
    Example: Father-in-law's house.
  5. Double Apostrophe: Kabhi use mat karna.
    My wife's secretary's mother... (Wrong)
The mother of my wife's secretary... (Correct)

Part 2: ARTICLES (A, An, The)

Articles Noun ke "determiners" hote hain. Ye batate hain ki Noun specific hai ya general.

1. Indefinite Articles: A / An

Ye "Ek" (One) ya "Koi" (Any) ka sense dete hain. Sirf Singular Countable Noun ke saath aate hain.

Rule of Sound (Swaron ka Khel):

  • A: Consonant Sound (Vyanjan dhwani) ke pehle.
    A boy, A union (Yoo-nion), A one-rupee note (Wa-n), A European.
  • An: Vowel Sound (Swar dhwani: A, E, I, O, U - Hindi ke เค…, เค†, เค‡...) ke pehle.
An apple, An hour (H silent hai), An M.L.A. (Em-L-A), An honest man.

2. Definite Article: The

'The' kisi cheez ko specific (vishesh) banane ke liye use hota hai.

Where to use 'THE' (Important List):
  • Unique Things: The Sun, The Moon, The Earth, The World.
  • Rivers, Oceans, Canals: The Ganga, The Pacific Ocean, The Panama Canal.
  • Holy Books: The Gita, The Bible (But not with author's name: ❌ Valmiki's The Ramayana).
  • Superlative Degree: The best boy, The tallest building.
  • Ordinal Numbers: The first, The second, The last.
  • Musical Instruments: I can play the guitar.
  • Nations/Communities: The English (Angrez log), The Rich (Ameer log), The Poor.

3. Zero Article (Omission of Articles) - ⚠️ Exam Trap

Kahan par Article NAHI lagana hai, ye janna sabse zaroori hai.

  • Languages ke pehle: I speak English. (Not 'The English').
Note: 'The English' ka matlab 'Angrez log' ho jata hai.
  • Subject names ke pehle: Mathematics is easy. (Not 'The Mathematics').
  • Meals ke pehle: I had lunch. (Not 'a lunch').
  • Primary Purpose Places:
    School, Church, Hospital, Bed, Prison.
Agar in jagah par wahi kaam karne ja rahe ho jiske liye ye bane hain (padhne, ilaaj, sone), to 'The' nahi lagega.
I go to school daily. (Student hoon).
My father went to the school to meet the Principal. (Specific visit).
  • Proper Nouns: Delhi, India, Ram (Exceptions: The USA, The UK, The Punjab).

๐Ÿ“ Chapter 2 Summary & Homework

Humne seekha ki Uncountable Nouns (Furniture, Information) ke saath 'A/An' nahi lagta aur na hi 's/es'. 'The' ka use specific cheezon ke liye hota hai aur 'A/An' ka sound ke hisab se.

Practice Question for You:
"He gave me an advice." - Is sentence mein kya galti hai?
(Hint: Advice uncountable hai, 'an' nahi aayega. Correct: "He gave me a piece of advice.")
