Welcome to Chapter 3. Ab tak humne Nouns padhe. Ab hum baat karenge un words ki jo Noun ki jagah lete hain – PRONOUNS.
Exams (SSC CGL, CHSL, Bank PO) mein Pronouns se sabse zyada questions "Spotting Errors" aur "Sentence Improvement" section mein aate hain. Is chapter mein hum sirf definition nahi, balki wo Top 10 Exam Rules seekhenge jo aksar students galat karte hain.
1. Pronoun Kya Hai? (Basics)
Definition: Pronoun wo word hai jo Noun ke repetition ko rokne ke liye use hota hai.
- Without Pronoun: Ravi is a boy. Ravi goes to school. Ravi likes Ravi's car. (Ajeeb lagta hai).
- With Pronoun: Ravi is a boy. He goes to school. He likes his car. (Better).
2. Cases of Personal Pronouns (The Table You Must Memorize)
Exam mein error tab hota hai jab student Subject ki jagah Object laga deta hai (e.g., "Me and Ravi went" - ❌ Wrong). Is table ko dhyan se dekhein (Table ko Blue Slider se scroll karein agar pura na dikhe):
| Person | Subjective Case (Kaam karne wala) |
Objective Case (Jis par kaam ho) |
Possessive Adjective (Haq jatana + Noun) |
Possessive Pronoun (Sirf Haq jatana) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Person (Speaker) | I, We | Me, Us | My, Our | Mine, Ours |
| 2nd Person (Listener) | You | You | Your | Yours |
| 3rd Person (Other) | He, She, It, They | Him, Her, It, Them | His, Her, Its, Their | His, Hers, --, Theirs |
- My ke baad Noun aana zaroori hai. (This is my book.)
- Mine akela aata hai. (This book is mine.)
- Exam Error: "Yours faithfully" (Correct) vs "Your's faithfully" (❌ Wrong - Pronoun mein apostrophe nahi lagta).
3. Important Rules for Competitive Exams
Rule 1: Order of Pronouns (231 vs 123 Rule)
Jab ek sentence mein ek se zyada pronouns aa jayein, toh unhe kaise arrange karein?
A. General / Good Sense (Rule 231): Pehle 2nd Person, fir 3rd, fir 1st.
- ✅ You, he and I are going to the party. (Correct)
- ❌ I, you and he are going... (Wrong)
B. Negative Sense / Mistake / Plural (Rule 123): Agar koi galti maan rahe ho ya saare pronouns Plural (We, You, They) hain, toh 1-2-3 order chalega.
- ✅ I, you and he have committed a crime. (Negative act)
- ✅ We, you and they should work together. (All Plural)
Rule 2: Objective Case after Prepositions & 'Let'
Prepositions (between, but, except, in, on) aur word 'Let' ke baad humesha Objective Case aata hai.
- ❌ There is no secret between he and I.
- ✅ There is no secret between him and me. (Correct)
- ✅ Let him go. (Not 'Let he go').
Rule 3: Comparison Rule (Subject vs Subject)
Comparison humesha barabar walon mein hota hai. Subject ka comparison Subject se hoga.
- ❌ He is taller than me. (Spoken English mein chalta hai, Exams mein nahi).
- ✅ He is taller than I (am). (Kyunki 'He' Subject hai, toh 'I' bhi Subject hona chahiye).
4. Relative Pronouns: Who, Whom, Which, That
Ye wo topic hai jahan sabse zyada confusion hoti hai.
| Pronoun | Usage | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Who | For Humans (Subject) | The boy who came here is my brother. |
| Whom | For Humans (Object) | The boy whom I met was smart. |
| Which | Animals / Non-living things | The dog which is black is mine. |
| That | Specific situations (Superlative, 'All', 'Same', 'Only') | He is the best boy that I know. |
Agar sentence mein All, The same, Only, None, Nothing words aa jayein, toh humesha 'That' use karo (Who/Which nahi).
Example: All that glitters is not gold. (Not 'All which').
5. Reflexive Pronouns (Myself, Himself...)
Jab subject ka action wapas usi par aaye (Reflection).
Important Verbs List (Inke baad Reflexive Pronoun zaroor lagayein):
Avail, Absent, Enjoy, Resign, Apply, Acquit, Adapt.
- ❌ He enjoyed in the party. (Incomplete - Kya enjoy kiya?)
- ✅ He enjoyed himself in the party. (Correct)
- ✅ I availed myself of the opportunity.
Caution: Kabhi bhi sentence ki shuruwat Reflexive Pronoun se mat karein.
❌ Myself is Ravi. (Wrong)
✅ I am Ravi. (Correct)
6. Distributive & Reciprocal Pronouns
Each Other vs One Another:
- Each Other: Do logon ke liye. (Ravi and Mohan love each other.)
- One Another: Do se zyada ke liye. (The five brothers love one another.)
Each / Either / Neither:
- Ye hamesha Singular maane jaate hain. Inke saath Verb bhi Singular aati hai.
- ✅ Each of the boys has a book. (Not 'have').
