Welcome to Chapter 4. Ab tak humne Nouns aur Pronouns cover kiye. Ab hum un words ko samjhenge jo sentence mein "Mirch-Masala" (Description) add karte hain – ADJECTIVES (Visheshan) aur ADVERBS (Kriya Visheshan).
Competitive exams mein questions aksar Degrees of Comparison aur Confusing Adverbs (jaise Late vs Lately) se aate hain. Chalo deep mein samajhte hain.
Part 1: ADJECTIVES (Visheshan)
Definition: Adjective wo word hai jo Kisi Noun ya Pronoun ki quality ya quantity batata hai. (e.g., Good boy, Five pens, Red car).
1. Order of Adjectives (The OSASCOMP Rule)
Agar ek sentence mein ek Noun ke liye bohot saare Adjectives aa jayein, toh unhe kis order mein likhna chahiye? Iske liye OSASCOMP rule yaad rakhein:
Example: "A beautiful (Opinion) big (Size) old (Age) round (Shape) black (Color) Indian (Origin) plastic (Material) dining (Purpose) table."
2. Degrees of Comparison Rules
Adjectives ki teen degrees hoti hain: Positive (Good), Comparative (Better), aur Superlative (Best). Exams ke liye ye rules rat lo:
| Rule Name | Explanation (Hinglish) | Exam Example (✅ vs ❌) |
|---|---|---|
| Latin Adjectives (IOR ending) | Words like Senior, Junior, Superior, Inferior, Prior ke baad 'than' nahi, 'to' lagta hai. | ❌ He is senior than me. ✅ He is senior to me. |
| Double Comparative | Do baar comparative use mat karo ('More' + 'Better' galat hai). | ❌ She is more wiser than him. ✅ She is wiser than him. |
| The + Comparative | Jab do cheezon mein "selection" ho raha ho, tab comparative ke pehle 'The' lagta hai. | ✅ She is the better of the two sisters. (Normally 'the' sirf superlative mein lagta hai, par yahan exception hai). |
| Prefer / Preferable | Inke saath hamesha 'to' aata hai, 'than' nahi. Aur inke pehle 'more' mat lagana. | ❌ Coffee is preferable than tea. ✅ Coffee is preferable to tea. |
3. Quantifiers Confusion: Little vs Few
- Little (Uncountable ke liye): Milk, Water, Hope, Money.
- Few (Countable ke liye): Boys, Books, Pens.
Iska "Article Game" samajhna zaroori hai:
- Little / Few: Na ke barabar (Negative). "I have little money" (Garib hoon).
- A Little / A Few: Thoda sa (Positive). "I have a little money" (Kaam chal jayega).
- The Little / The Few: Jo thoda sa bacha hai wo pura (Specific). "I spent the little money I had."
Part 2: ADVERBS (Kriya Visheshan)
Definition: Adverb wo word hai jo Verb, Adjective ya kisi dusre Adverb ko modify karta hai. (e.g., Runs fast, Very good).
1. Adverb Order (MPT Rule)
Jab sentence mein kab, kahan aur kaise teeno aa jayein, toh order hoga: Manner (Kaise) ⮕ Place (Kahan) ⮕ Time (Kab).
- ❌ He danced yesterday beautifully at the school. (Order galat hai)
- ✅ He danced beautifully (M) at the school (P) yesterday (T).
2. Confusing Adverbs Pairs (Most Important)
Exams mein Examiner aise words deta hai jo dikhne mein same lagte hain par meaning alag hota hai.
| Adverb 1 | Adverb 2 (With 'ly') | Difference in Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Hard (Sakht mehnat) | Hardly (Mushkil se / Na ke barabar) | He works hard. (Mehnati hai) He hardly works. (Kaamchor hai / Kaam nahi karta). |
| Late (Der se) | Lately (Haal hi mein / Recently) | He came late. (Deri se aaya) Have you seen him lately? (Kya abhi haal-filhaal dekha?). |
| Free (Muft mein) | Freely (Azadi se) | Rides are free. (Paise nahi lagenge) We can move freely. (Rok-tok nahi hai). |
3. Inversion Rule (Advanced)
Agar sentence kisi Negative Adverb se shuru ho (Hardly, Scarcely, No sooner, Never, Seldom), toh Verb Subject se pehle aati hai (Question format jaisa).
- ❌ Hardly he had reached the station...
- ✅ Hardly had he reached the station... (Inversion apply hua).
📝 Chapter 4 Summary & Homework
Humne seekha ki Adjectives Noun ke liye aur Adverbs Verb ke liye hote hain. 'Senior/Junior' ke saath 'to' lagana hai. MPT Rule se sentence arrange karna hai aur 'Hardly' ka matlab 'mehnat' nahi hota.
Practice Question:
"She is more wiser than her sister." - Isme kya galti hai?
(Hint: 'More' aur 'Wiser' dono comparative hain. Correct: "She is wiser than her sister.")
Next Chapter: Next hum padhenge Prepositions (In, On, At, Between, Among) jo English ka sabse confusing part maana jata hai aur 'Fixed Prepositions' ki list bhi dekhenge.
