Welcome to the biggest and most detailed chapter of our series. Agar aap English Grammar mein "Master" banna chahte hain, toh Prepositions ko samajhna sabse zaroori hai. Ye chapter thoda lamba hai kyunki humne ismein Types, Rules, aur Visual Concepts sab add kiya hai.
Exams (SSC CGL, Bank PO, UPSC) mein 30-40% errors isi chapter se aate hain. Chalo shuru karte hain!
1. What is a Preposition? (Detail Definition)
Definition: Pre (Pehle) + Position (Sthan). Wo shabd jo Noun/Pronoun ke pehle lagkar uska rishta sentence ke baaki words (Verb, Adjective, ya Noun) se jodta hai.
Sentence mein dekho "Position", "Direction", ya "Time" kaun bata raha hai.
Example: "The cat is under the table."
Agar hum 'under' hata dein ("The cat is the table") toh sentence ka matlab hi badal jayega ki Billi hi Table hai. Isliye relation batane ke liye Preposition zaroori hai.
2. Types of Prepositions (Jo Books me Missing Hota Hai)
Prepositions sirf 'in/on/at' nahi hote. Inke structure ke hisab se 4 types hote hain:
| Type | Explanation (Hinglish) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Simple Prepositions | Chhote words jo commonly use hote hain. | At, By, For, In, Of, Off, On, Out, Through, Till, To, Up, With. |
| 2. Compound Prepositions | Prefix (a- ya be-) lagakar banaye gaye words. | About, Above, Across, Among, Around, Before, Behind, Below, Beside, Between. |
| 3. Phrasal Prepositions | Words ka group jo ek single preposition ka kaam kare. (Exam ke liye Most Imp). | According to, By means of, In front of, In spite of, On account of, Owing to, Instead of. |
| 4. Participle Prepositions | Verbs jo 'ing' par khatam hoti hain par preposition ka kaam karti hain. | Concerning, Considering, Regarding, Pending, Barring (ke alawa). |
3. The Golden Rules of Time & Place (The Pyramid Concept)
Time aur Place ke liye hum AT, ON, IN ka use karte hain. Isse 'Pyramid' samjho:
- Top (Sabse Chhota/Specific): AT
- Middle (Thoda Bada): ON
- Bottom (Sabse Bada/General): IN
| Preposition | TIME Rule ⏰ | PLACE Rule 📍 | Exam Exception ⚠️ |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT | Exact Clock Time: At 5 PM, At 10:30. Festivals: At Diwali (Pure period ki baat ho rahi hai). |
Exact Point / Address: At the bus stop, At 21-Baker Street. Small Towns: At Rampur. |
'At night' (General) vs 'In the night' (Specific night). Generally At night use karein. |
| ON | Days & Dates: On Monday, On 15th August, On my birthday. | Surface Contact: On the table, On the wall, On the floor. | Agar din ke kisi hisse ki baat ho: On Monday morning (On lagega kyunki Monday main hai). |
| IN | Months/Years/Seasons: In May, In 1947, In Winter. Parts of Day: In the morning/evening. |
Enclosed Area / Big Cities: In Delhi, In India, In the park (boundary ke andar). | "I live at Laxmi Nagar in Delhi." (Chhote ke liye At, Bade ke liye In). |
4. Vertical Position: Over vs Above | Under vs Below
Ye concept aksar confuse karta hai ki "Pankha mere upar hai" - toh Over bole ya Above?
- Over: Vertically Upar (Theek sar ke upar). Ya fir cover kar raha ho.
Ex: The fan is over my head. (Exact upar).
Ex: Put a blanket over the baby. (Cover karna). - Above: Level mein upar (Kahin bhi upar ho sakta hai).
Ex: The kite is flying above the tree. (Tree ke level se upar hai, zaroori nahi theek upar ho).
- Under: Vertically Niche (Kisi cheez ke theek niche ya cover kiya hua).
Ex: The cat is under the table. - Below: Level mein niche.
Ex: My rank is below yours. (Rank ka level).
5. Confusing Pairs & Exam Favorites (Deep Dive)
Yahan wo rules hain jo Examiner jaan-boojh kar poochta hai taaki aap galti karein.
| Confusing Pair | Detailed Explanation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Between vs Among vs Amongst | Between: 2 entities (Ya specific names). Among: >2 (General group, Consonant sound). Amongst: >2 (Vowel sound start: Us, Our). |
1. Match between India, Aus & NZ. (Specific names). 2. Distributed among the boys. 3. Distributed amongst us. |
| By vs With | By: Doer (Kaam karne wala insaan/agent). With: Instrument (Jis hathiyar/tool se kaam hua). |
The paper was cut by Ram with scissors. |
| On time vs In time | On time: Scheduled time (Exact time par). In time: Time se pehle (Before deadline). |
1. The train left on time. (Right schedule). 2. Reach the station in time. (Taki train miss na ho). |
| In vs Into | In: Static (No movement). Into: Motion (Movement from out to in). |
1. She is in the pool. 2. She jumped into the pool. |
| Die of vs Die from | Die of: Disease/Bimari se marna. Die from: Cause (Hunger, Thirst, Accident). |
1. He died of Cancer. 2. He died from over-eating. |
